DESIGNING USER EXPERIENCES
IMPROVING DIGITAL PRODUCTS

ABOUT ME

I am a UX/UI Designer with over 6 years of experience. I love being challenged by design problems. I focus on clean interfaces, intuitive action flows and great user experiences. But most of all, I focus on happy users of awesome products.

For me, UX is culture: Placing the user in the center of every stage of the creation or the evolution of a product, from an idea's conception to the next released version. A recipe for success.

Do you have a great idea, or want to improve your product? Let's talk about UX!

UX STORIES AND DETAILED VIEW OF MY WORK IN SOME CHALLENGING PROBLEMS

myAuth App
myAuth Mobile App
"myAuth" mobile app created for the students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) as a tool that collects all the appropriate information about their studies into one place. The application displays personal or generic data about current courses, grades, schedule, classrooms and the university's amenities.

THE CHALLENGE
The biggest challenge in this project was the Information Architecture process: select the right information that a student needs at any time in their day while being "on-the-go" and place it in an attractive interface with simple task flows. The key point was to find and leave out all the data that seemed important at first, but was sort of unnecessary on a mobile application.

THE PROCESS
To achieve that, Analytics Data from several university's services were analyzed, and Focus Groups sessions run in order to find and prioritize user needs. Lo-fi Mockups were created and used in all stages of development until the final structure was chosen, while Usability Tests* on Hi-Fi Prototypes and early versions revealed the main issues. User Feedback and Analytics Data on the demo versions were analyzed in order to set the final goals for the MVP version that released at April 2017 at about 40.000 users.

THE EXTRA MILE
For this project, I also had to use some graphic design skills. Logo, Graphics and Colour Schemes were created and chosen carefully to match the overall concept: less busy, more attractive to students.

*We organised and ran Usability tests in small groups of 5-7 students (based on the Personas we created), in order to achieve quick results and find out the most important issues each time.
Today's notifications appear in first screen. User can quickly check what's new and what's on.
Custom made graphics for intro pages. Young ages love to skip intros, so images had to do their job :)
Wireframes, mockups and prototypes were created and used in every stage of development.
Different colors of headers were used, to help users navigate easier between groups of information.
One of the biggest challenges was to provide very smooth flow of actions.
Custom made logo. This is the oldest and most familiar building in campus, the Old School of Philosophy.
Design System and Style Guides
for the services of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
When four different units were combined into one IT Center in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2013, about 45000 users had to deal with over 30 different software services with different design, style and "identity".

THE PROBLEM
Surveys and feedback showed that users were feeling lost and disappointed. Lots of services, names, URLs, and lack of feeling sure that they are using the official university services. One of the main reasons was that many of those services were off-the-shelf web software with default themes, while all the custom products were made by different development teams without following any common style rules.

THE PROCESS
As a UI/UX Designer in the IT Center, the first priority was to aim to a converged look&feel of the (over 30) services,by defining the Design Principles that should be followed in every interface design/development. These should be simple, easy to integrate in every service/website, and most of all: recognizable by users. We started by defining the rules of brand names and URLs, designing and applying a certain header/body/footer style, grouping all services in categories with discrete colors, applied as the basic color of their interface, and re-designing all logos and icons following certain principles and new color scheme.

The next step was to extend those principles into Style Guides which had certain rules for creating and using interfaces: structure, look, navigation, colors, and even graphics, company profile, logos, banners, newsletters etc. Furthermore, this guide developed as design tool set, a repository of HTML/SASS/CSS/Javascript code to be used by the development teams.

THE RESULT
The basic accomplishment of the Design System and the Style Guides was the company awareness of the design culture. In practice, services now have a perfect amount of similarity and differentiation. As shown by User Surveys and Focus Groups sessions, the above design achieved the main goal: users now recognize the services and have a feeling of comfort, familiarity, and trust, when using those interfaces.

Today, each User Research method proves that university's users like the fact that all services/web interfaces have a common look and provide common experience. The large collection of services, that once was chaotic, now is a complete set of tools for university users.
The Style Guides developed as a design tool set that contains all kind of UI items
Converged look&feel. Each university service is a part of the same family.
Custom made logos for IT Center and services/products. Certain guidelines used in order to make them recognizable and discreet.
Newsletters and mail notifications re-designed, following the new design principles. Marketing graphics too.
openeClass - An opensource Courses Management Platform
Openeclass is an opensource Courses Management System, which is used by nearly all academic institutions in Greece, alongside with schools of secondary education, supporting a great number of online courses attended by thousands of participants.

THE CHALLENGE
When I joined Openeclass it was a running project with certain deadlines and a lot of developers already working in small groups for various subsystems. So my first job as a UX/UI Designer was to quickly jump in, fit right, be agile. Stakeholders had done a good job in propose new features and fixes for current issues, but as a beginning of a new version (version 3) there was serious need of User Research.

The biggest challenge for that new version was to re-design the UI, fix the usability issues and include new features, on a platform that already had thousands of everyday users.

THE PROCESS
Gathering data from Stakeholders Interviews and User Interviews, and creating Personas, was the point to start as they revealed the desired direction of the design for this new version, and provide a "common language" between designers and developers. Ideas transformed quickly into Low-Fi Wireframes, which were used in Guerrilla Usability Tests in order to get closer to what users really need and want. As the final structure was chosen, Hi-Fi Mockups were created to coordinate all the development and design teams. At every stage of the project, Guerrilla Usability Tests and UX Expert Reviews run for each sybsystem, in order to provide great usability in the whole platform, and insure important issues like accessibility compliance (WCAG2.0 AA), responsiveness, converged look and feel and usage experience.

THE RESULT
As showed by Surveys and users' feedback, Openeclass version 3 was a great improvement as it offered modern features and tools of Courses and Learning Management Systems, and improved usability and accessibility. In addition, the above achieved without requiring thousands of current users to be adjusted in new habits, as we kept similar the baseline of the platform's structure.

The Openeclass v3 was part of a major national project of producing Open Courses of Greek universities into public, a successful work that offers almost 4000 courses from 25 institutions, and awarded with the Creative Innovation Award for Open Education Excellence 2016 by Open Education Consortium.
Converged look and feel of the tools and subsystems of the platform. Personal Tools and Gamification was some of the features provided in version 3.
A theming mechanism provides institutions with their own custom look, over the same baseline design.
Every platform's function is available in any kind of device.
Simple colors and discreet areas of functionality, provide great usability and user experience.
